A really fantastic dress from the 1940s. Usually when we get dresses like this they are tiny but this one is decent size. It has beautifully embroidered birds on it, perhaps Bird of Paradise or Phoenix, in a rayon satin stitch. There are ties attached at the inside of the neckline and I'm not sure how they are intended to be worn so I have shown it tied in front and then in the back (which covers the zipper, so maybe that was the purpose?). Anyway, they are very interesting and I leave it up to you as to how they should be worn. The ties match the covered satin buttons that are down the front and on the sleeve of the dress. It has a belt that is in very good condition as well which is fantastic! Gathering on the yoke and at the cap of the sleeve are iconic 40s styling.
The dress has a metal zipper at the back of the neck and pulls over your head to put it on. You will notice that it is too big for the mannequin and I have pinned it in to fit. I like the hang of the skirt when the skirt is cinched in with the belt and it would be easy to move the snap of the belt so that you can wear it perfectly fitted for your waist.
A really beautiful, iconic 40's dress in very good condition. There may be one darkened area above the armpit on one side but it appears as a very very subtle smudge, perhaps from washing the dress and the dye settled a little heavier in that one space. It is not seen when the dress is on.
I have tried to represent the colour of the dress but I do want to say that it is a darker burgundy that what the photos seam to show. The fabric seams to be a rayon crepe. It is is unlined and there is no label.
